DVD recorder will not create a menu!

 Hi.  I recorded some video (from off the air and also from a vhs tape) onto a DVD.  I'm using the RCA DVD Recorder/VCR   DRC8335.  The video is made up of lets say, five segments, or Titles as they call them.  Before I "finalize" the DVD-R disc, I can play it back in the machine, and it shows a menu clearly showing the five seperate segments.           But after I finalize it, and then play it back, I have no menu to choose segments from.  If I hit Play or otherwise activate the disc, it begins to play directly from the first segment on the disc.   I at no point have access to any menu to look at first.  I can skip forward to the next segment, and back, but .......no menu!  I know it is supposed to create one, as there's all sorts of ways to title the various segments, and also create an overall title for the disc.   But this is all no use once it's finalized, because the titles and segments are not accessable.  You just have to watch the whole disc.
