I'm looking to get a Sharp 1080p LCD which has no DVI or other computer input, only HDMI. I want to be able to connect a laptop with VGA connector. I'm wondering how it will look after converting from VGA to DVI and then DVI to HDMI. if the quality is no good then I'll have to find another monitor but wondering what's the best way and if it's worth it in the end.
thanks, Joey
Hi Joey,
I'm not sure that kind of conversion is possible. You can't convert DVI-A (which is what it would be in a VGA to DVI conversion) into HDMI. You can only convert single link DVI-I or DVI-D into HDMI. Unfortunately, you'll need a notebook with a DVI connector... or you need to find a different monitor. Sorry to give you the bad news. :-(
thanks for the straight deal, matt.
there's another version of the Sharp LCD with DVI input. how would that work (technically and also visually) going from VGA to DVI --- on a 1920-pixel-wide screen?

If the question is just about VGA to DVI, you shouldn't notice any difference between a VGA signal and a VGA signal converted to DVI-A. A digital DVI signal would probably be a bit sharper, but it's not drastic.
The more important question is how will a PC signal look on this Sharp TV? That's harder to say. Not all TVs are very PC friendly. What model are you looking at?
Here is a converter that will do what you need (accepts VGA and audio).
converter looks good - thanks for all suggestions. in the end I got a Sony with VGA input. 1080i looks fine and SD is pretty decent with all around a good black level...
