Hello,I just wanted to thank Mr Dillon.....you are one smart fella.
I aquired a projection tv from a friend of mine(he was gonna kick it to the curb).I tore it apart last night, got stumped and started searching the internet. I ran across this site and read some posts concerning this particular model and narrowed it down very quickly......convergence ic gone bad. The symptoms were the convergence was way off and the screen had a big bad bowtie. I stopped at the local electronics store today after work, bought the ic and changed it out and presto!....almost fixed. Also....I have a fairely decent electronics background. I can solder well anyway....and know to stay away from the high voltage stuff inside.
The particular model is a GE46GW948(XY6)----chasis:PTK195P3A-------ic # is STK730-130 (22 bucks)
The only problem is that the blue is out a little bit on pretty much the whole screen.
Now....I don't know the full history of the tv(my friends uncle gave it to him) I could tell someone had already been in it (I found a tuner cleaner spout inside of it). Some one may have attempted to tweek the lens alignment mechanically...I don't know.....I also don't know if that is even possible.
There is a wing nut on each of the lenses...two of them are broke. It doesen't seem like that,in itself ,would really make a difference because of the indent in it when you turn it.(they stay put pretty well without the wing nut) I just don't know HOW they got broke.
I also ran across an article last night explaining how to access the service menu. I can tell what some of the settings do but most of them I can't figure out. Do anybody have any info on that? The big green matrix is annoying because you have to keep exiting the menu to see what the overall effect is. Does the big green matrix have anything to do with adjusting the convergence?...Can you even adjust it? I don't have a remote for this thing either.
Well anyway...that's my story and those are my questions. Any help would be gratly appreciated!!

Does the replacement IC look just like the original IC, not by the shape, or size, but with the exact writing on it? Does the original IC have Sanyo on it? If it does and the replacement does not, you will need to most likely get another IC that is the proper one. If the original does not have the Sanyo written on it, you will need to get the service manual and see if all of the feedback resistors are good and or you may need to touch up the convergence alignment. Good Luck, and please let us know how you make out with this repair.
Larry,
The chip I took out looks just like the one I put in. I don't have the chip in my possesion right at the moment(it's at work) but I am almost positive that it didn't have Sanyo on it. I will double check it tomorrow. I just remember thinking that it looked exactly the same. There was no brand name on it that I can recall.
"Get a service manual".......It seems I would have better luck obtaining gold from fort knox!!
"Touch up the convergence alignment"......Not sure what you mean by that. Does that have anything to do with the way the lenses twist?........or are you referring to the adjustments you can make in the "service menu"?
Does anyone here have a service manual for this TV?
Thanks for all your help
No, the lens alighnment I'm afraid will only adjust the focus. You will need to find a service manual or guide to show you where the differant alighnment are. You can download a service manual for about 17 bucks from HERE. Man I wish it was that easy to get gold from Fort Knox!!
17 bucks.......Now that's a deal! Thanks Larry. Ill keep you posted.
Yeppers I thought so too! Once you get it, send me a copy to [email protected] please.
Hello all......I realize that I am several years late in this thread but I need the service manual to do the same thing you guys were doing back then for the same tv but I don't want to have to pay $17 to get it. is there ne way that someone could send me a copy of the service manual to [email protected] thanks guys.
Since you changed the convergence IC'S what is the problem now? what is the model or chassis number?
Larry D
sorry I guess I was not clear in my first post. I have opened up the back and cleaned it out, I have also accessed the "Adjustment" function inside the menu system. I have all the values written down that are present right now, so I need the service manual so I can try and manually fix it before I have to go out and buy a new set of IC's. I am kind of thinking that I may have to end up replacing them ne way but I wanna try the other way first. If you or neone has a copy of the service manual for a GE 46GW948VX3. [email protected]
if it went out of convergence believe me you need new output ICs before you try to do any major adjustments, they do not go out that far unless there is A problem with the driver/output-amp circuit. The best advice I can tell you at this point is to go to tvrepairkits.com and order the complete convergence kit for your model of TV set, no need to search and order multiple parts from different sources and pay multiple shipping fees! The kit comes with original Sanyo STK ICÂ’S , not those cheap aftermarket or china made ICÂ’S full pictorial directions, the thermal paste, resistors, the correct Pico fuses, AND free live on-Line tech assistance in case you run into a problem with the repair. They ship out 2 to 3 day Priority mail, the next day in most cases, when you purchase the kit ask me fto send you a copy ohf the service manual as you will need it to perform the proper convergence IN the Service menu Larry Dillon
I also have this same tv (General Electric model 46GW948)I also this morning had the rainbow arched picture that looks rather 3D. I believe it is the convergence chip. Where do I find the part I need? and also does anyone have the service manual they can email me? We are currently unempolyed and budget is super tight right now, so any help is so appreciated!!!! Thank you
