Dear All,
I recently was given a 55 inch Philips Rear Projection TV Model # 55PP935217. It will not power on at all. I have extensive computer knowledge(build,repair,software...etc) but have never worked on a television. I opened the back of the model and changed the fuses hoping for an easy fix with no luck. I spoke to a local TV repair shop and he explained that for a few years Philips contracted out all there work to China and the products suffered, basically he said they were not built to last (skinny boards, weak sodder joints..etc) It would cost me $75 USD just to have him come look at it at my house (I drive a Honda Civic so its hard for me to bring it to him..lol). He says that they've made a kit for this specific model when the TV goes dead and it costs upwards of $500 for the kit. The kit I guess replace a bunch of interior pieces. When I open the back up directly to the left of where the AC cord is is this device that looks like a distributor on a car. The wires coming of it look also like spark plug wires on a car. There seems to be soot on those wires and Im not sure if that piece shorted out or whats going on. All I know is that I have no power at all. Im posting this in hopes that maybe someone has heard or dealt with this situation or similar. If the fee from the TV repair man seems fair and correct. Any help at all would be appreciated. I cannot find any diagrams or service manuals online that dont cost $$$. Its hard for me to justify paying for a service manual when I have no TV repair experiance and a manual might do me no good at all. Any help and/or advice anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

If you have no TV experince, play it safe and call in a pro to repair this set for you, as it is not as simple as replacing parts that may look bad. You will have to invest in something if you want to fix the TV set, as manuals for most sets are not free I'm afraid. I do sometimes have manuals for TV sets that I am willing to share, but not on this set. You will need to get the manual and trouble shoot the SMPS. This is where your problem most likely is for your TV set. Contact MCM electronics and see if they have a repair kit for this model number. Good Luck and let us know what you find wrong with your TV set.
I own the Philips 55PP935217. I have had it since '03 and the picture is beginning to "warp" near the top center and bottom center. I believe it is the lamp going bad. I tried the manual convergence and it had no effect (suggested by Philips). I cannot find the correct part number for my set, however. Does anyone have to link or other suggestion to find out? Thanks in advance for all the help.

If the set has convergence adjustments, there is NO lamp. It is probably the convergence IC's. You will need to have good soldering skills and know how to work on printed circuit boards. If you have no Printed Circuit board repair experience, play it safe and call in a pro to assist you with this repair. Good Luck with your repair.
I am the one that started this post. I had a TV repair man come over and we was able to get the set working with only a new fuse that cost $3. (It was $75 just to have him over ..lol) Recently the same problem McHawk describes is happening to me. The color blue convergance has warped and it will not let me adjust. Please advise me on what you end up doing about this as it seems we have the exact same problem. You can email me at [email protected], Thank you and have a great day.
It is like larry said it is the convergence ic's, very common problem for all brands of tv's. i think the ic's are locted on the left hand pc board, toward the back on a large heatsink. the board is called the small signal panel.
The conversion IC's are 7044 and 7045 Both Ic's are STK392-120.
it is best to replace both at same time. Also check all the 31XX resistors for open. They all very low resistance and very low tolorance. must replace if defective with exact resistance and tolorance.
I have a Philips 55pp935217 and the colors are offset. And also when the tv is on, there seems to be this static interference on the right had side of the screen that happens every couple of minutes. I picked up the tv by my house. A neighbor was giving it away and said that it works fine. I don't know if it's a cause of moving it from the street to a moving turck or what, but I would just like to know how to fix it and fix it cheap! Thank you
I have a Philips 55pp935217 - bought in Sept '02. The picture clarity is still going good thankfully, but for the past year or so - the color quality seems to be going. I have played with the color and contrast controls (almost to max), and you can just barely distinguish blue from green and yellow, etc. The only color that really seems to still work good is the red color. I was wondering if anyone has run into this - and whether it is something that can be replaced easily in tv to restore the color - OR - if this is basically the guts of the tv and it's on its last legs and not worth repair due to price/age (have gotten a solid 9 years out of it).
What you are describing is classic aging of the CRT's. At this point, I wouldn't go further, since replacing even one CRT is not advisable. Most TV techs would advise changing all three CRT's together so that the color balance remains stable and normal for some time period.
Thanks - I found one site that mentioned just "tube"- so might be the CRT - but said that the fluid in it can become cloudy and if drained and replaced with new fluid it would restore color. So I wasn't sure if it was worth the trouble - even if I just kept this as a 2nd tv and bought a new one. Thanks.
