"Bulb" shutter setting on compact digital camera?

One feature of my old film SLR that I miss in the smaller digital cameras is the lack of a "bulb" shutter speed setting. I've always been into available light photography and would like to keep the shutter open longer than the 15 or so seconds the camera will allow.

I have a Cannon Powershot A540, which I thought was a pretty good feature/size/resolution/optical zoom/price  compromise between a semi-pro SLR digital and the smallest automatics, but still no "B". Is it even available on this class of camera? Has anyone "hacked" into the firmware that controls the camera to tweak or add functions?
