JCV TV PROBLEM

Make- JVC

Model-28GT1BJF

This TV is two years and two months old.

When we switch the TV ON using the Standby ON/Off button we are unable to gain any picture nor are we able to control the switch which constantly changes from the color RED to GREEN.

When the light at the Standby button changes from Green to Red we have a series of White flashes on the screen. They vary from a broadband of 8" at the lower section of the screen to a narrow band of 1/2 " in the middle of the screen.  On occasions it  does a combination of the broad band at the bottom along with smaller bands at the middle and sometimes the top of the screen.

We can switch the TV off using the Standby On/Off switch.

Any ideas of what is causing this problem?

This set could have poor

This set could have poor solder connections in the high voltage circuit, around the flyback transformer, or I have seen a couple of low value, high voltage capacitors go bad in the main power supply that can cause these symptoms.  If you have an ESRtypr capacitor checker and  know how to test capacitors, make sure you discharge these capacitors first, as they do hold a nice charge and can bite you!.. If you have no circuit board experience, please call a tech in to assist you in this repair.  Good Luck and let us know how this turns out for you.

We have been here before and

We have been here before and decided NOT to repair the TV.

The set is too heavy to take to a repair shop and sadly we don't know anyone in this area we could trust with the repair. Those who we knew could do the work have long since retired. As it so happens, one of our old TV's,a BEON(?), we had repaired 25 Years ago is still running and used by one of our kids.

The last TV (before the JVC) gave us similar problems and we had two repairs with short warranty's. I believe we should cut and run from it sooner. The minimum charge for a callout is around $170 Plus depending on the repair.

I had a look around and bought a new similar replacement for $260 with a guarantee. With LCD and Hi-Definition coming in the more traditional sets are being sold off at reduced prices.

Many thanks for the guidance.
