Panasonic PT-53WX42 Dead but Blinking Once

I turned on my Panasonic PT-53WX42 today and it did not display any images then turned off by itself after a few seconds with the power light blinking three times.

I waited a half an hour and tried turning it on again and now it's turning itself off after a few seconds and blinking once.

Anyone that has a Panny service manual know what this means? Time to call a repair technician? I've had it since 09-2002 with no problems until today.

Any help anyone can give is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Your problem is an indication

Your problem is an indication that the sweep or the high voltage is not starting up.  A shorted horizontal output transistor or a bad flyback transformer, a bad regulator in the main power supply, bad capacitors in the sweep power supply.  Yes I think if you have no Tv repair knowledge, play it safe and call out a pro to assist you in this repair. Good Luck and keep us informed about this repair.

Had the tech out and he said

Had the tech out and he said several resistors on the convergance board burned out.   He has to replace those and some type of other power component on the board that allowed the resistors to be destroyed I believe.

He said it typically happens because when the TV was designed and all the components are new they work fine.  As some of the components age they stray from spec and this particular component let more current through and it burns out other parts.  He'd replace them with slightly higher rated components to handle the new current load.

Total should be about $450 he said, includes reconverging the 480i, 480p and 1080i modes after reinstalling the convergence board.
