50" Hitachi tv shuts off after its turned on or it won't turn on at all!!!

Could someone help me and tell me what is wrong with my TV It comes on sometimes then just shuts off. Or it won't turn on at all???  It a 50" rear projection Hitachi tv and it about 12 yrs old it has the wood cabnet around the screen.........Thanks
