"Rainbow" pattern on Sanyo CRT

Hi. We picked up a 32" Sanyo DS31550 for next to nothing. Everything is fine except on the left side there is a rainbow-colored/bullseye-shaped pattern. It extends about 4-5" in from the left and is about 12". I saw somewhere online something about a slipped Shadow Mask as a result of a drop or hard impact. I don't know the history of this set so I couldn't say. Is there any chance of life for this thing? It has been properly degaused.

Thanks, Keith

Here are a couple of pics:

Nice pictures.  You should

Nice pictures.  You should leave the blue on and have the set deguassed and see if that helps.  The auto degaussing circuit in this model is common for not working correctly all the time due to a cold solder connection on the deguassing coil plug, and /or the Thermistor.  It's hard to tell if the set has been dropped, unless it is a heavy set like this one.  Look on all the corners of the set and see if there are any minor flat spots or small hairline cracks.  If you can borrow a deguassing coil try this.  With the blue screen on, the coil plugged in, but off.  With the coil in your hand, start in a small circular motion in front and close to the screen turn on the coil and continue to move the coil in a circular motion making the circle larger each time you make a revolution in front of the screen till you are outside the front of the screen, sharply turn the coil away perpendicular from the screen and turn off the coil.  If that helped then your all set.  If it did not make a differance, the shadow mask has slipped and the tube will have to be replaced fo fix this problem.  I am certain though that would not be a cost effective thing to do.  Good Luck, and let us know how you made out.

Thanks for taking the time to

Thanks for taking the time to reply. We do have a deguassing coil, but it didn't make any difference. I imagine there is not much hope of fixing this outside of replacing the tube, which as you stated probably wouldn't be worth it considering we picked the TV up for $5 at the Salvation Army. But if there are any other possible fixes we would be willing to tyr them out. There doesn't apear to be any physical damage to the set either.

Thanks again.

So I found a decent sized magnet, now what should I do?

hold it in front of the TV

hold it in front of the TV with the blue screen and slowly in a circular motion as you make the circle bigger and pull away.
