Sony KP57WS500, picture problems

I have the 57# Sony Rear projection tv (KP57WS500) Last night the picture was great (the HD signals are wonderful). This morning I turned it on and am having some real problems. The picture looks concave, where both sides are curving out. I also see two images of just about everything. In addition, I can see curved horizental lines when the screen goes to a solid color (ie when I hit the flash focus button and the screen goed blue). The sound is fine. The unit was built Nov 2002. Any idea what this is and how to repair it? How much should it cost? What type of repair service should I look for? I'm in Columbus Ohio.  Thanks!

Also, should I even attempt

Also, should I even attempt to fix myself?

Ok , The first and formost,

Ok , The first and formost, the important question, Do you have any experience repairing or working on a solid state TV's printed circuit boards? If the answer is no, then i would for sure play it safe and call in a pro to assist you in this repair. It sounds like you have the typical convergence problem, where the two IC's need to be replaced, and most likly an alighnment is needed as well. This should not cost you more then 250.00 to 400.00 bucks, depending on where your at. These TV sets do not have any user replaceable parts inside of them, so trying to work on them would most likly be a big problem. Good Luck, and please keep us informed of the progress with this repair.

Thank you so much. I do not

Thank you so much. I do not have experience with this, so I will hire it out.  A "Platinum" sony repair shop came up with the same likely problem and estimated at $300-350. All other shops refuse to even discuss cost, other than $105-130 just for showing up at the door. Is that common for techs to not discuss likely problems over the phone and estimate?

To some, yes and to some NO.

To some, yes and to some NO.  Mostly the shops that do not really charge by the job, but charge what they can out of a job.
