Toshiba CF3262B Color In And Out On Occasion

I own a Toshiba CF3262B 32" Color TV purchased in the early 90's. This TV is probably the best TV I have ever owned. I have had no problems up until recently.  It is picture perfect so to say. Recently my family has been noticing every once in a while the color picture going to a black and white picture and maybe after 10 seconds returning to color again. From then on everything is great until the next time which could be in a half hour or after a couple of hours where the color will go to black and white again for maybe 10 seconds until the color picture returns. We have never had any problems with this TV . Its color is as perfect as can be and the picture as clear as can be. Just curious to what may be happening and whether a part inside the TV is starting to go bad.

My guess and this is only a guess is either the 3.58mhz crystal is going bad or you've got a Y/C jungle IC about to fail.

Thanks for your reply. If this is the case what do you suggest I do being the TV is getting pretty old? Is it worth it at this point to have a TV repairman come in to take a look at it since the problem is a intermittent one and may not occur while the repairman is here? There are times when nothing happens with the color for hours and as I mentioned when it does occur it is only for maybe ten seconds or less. During the time when the problem doesn't occur the picture is as clear and the color  as perfect as if the set were still new.  Last Sunday it happened once while watching a complete NFL game in roughly 4 hours or so.  Originally I thought that it may be Direct TV that is causing what we are experiencing but I am pretty sure it is in the TV. The problem hasn't occurred on any other set hooked up to Direct TV.  Its been happening for at least a year now but the problem doesn't seem to be happening anymore frequently now then when we first experienced it a year or so ago. As I mentioned earlier in my previous thread I don't ever remember owning a better TV then this Toshiba during my lifetime. I am 55 years old. I paid almost a thousand dollars for this TV from Sams Club at least 10 or more years ago.  It is big and takes 2 people to pick it up.  Although 32" TV's have come down alot in price since that time the problem really isn't bad enough to get rid of this set right now being it is a intermittent occurrence. I am just looking for some answers here.

This will not be repairable

This will not be repairable in the home, it will have to go into the shop.

Second, since the problem is very, very intermittant and fails for such a short time, it's quite possible a tech may not be able to accurately diagnose the problem and will wind up taking educated guesses at what the problem might be.  You're going to have to pay for those guesses.  I would estimate a repair bill that easily approaches $200.  Considering the age of the set and how little this problem acts up I'm going to tell you to live with it until the color goes out completely. At that point you can consider a new TV and have it delivered while your old set is hauled away at the same time.

MOtvGuy,

MOtvGuy,
Great advice. You kinda think on the same lines as I do. As much as I know about electronics I know an intermittant problem is hard to diagnose whether it be in a TV or in a Car. This is my dilemma here. Right now even after a year the problem isn't so bad for how many times it is noticed by us watching. The strange thing though is that it doesn't seem to have gotten any worse. I guess we will just have to sit and wait it out. For me to throw this TV away at this point in time makes no sense to me. I just hope when it is time that I will be able to purchase a TV as good as this one has been to us because for as good as this one has been it sure is going to be hard to part with it after reading about some of the problems others have had on this forum with sets just a couple of years old.

I have also had the tuner

I have also had the tuner become intermittant to cause these types of problems, but as stated before most likly not worth the time or trouble to repair.

Hey Larry,

Believe it or not my family is still using our Toshiba CF3262B TV to this day. I first wrote here about a problem we were having back in Nov of 2006 with the color going out once in awhile for about 10 seconds. Well I can say one thing. That problem hasn't gotten any worst. It is still an intermitant problem that we hardly notice anymore.

I write now because we have a brand new problem happening I would say for the last couple of months. We started seeing white lines appear on the top of the screen going across the screen. It started off with maybe one or two lines appearing and then they would disappear after the TV was on for a little while. Now we have white lines maybe going down about 4  inches across the screen and these lines just seem to linger around sometimes breaking up and then coming back at the top of the screen. What am I facing here? Is this worth getting fixed and is there a part that I can replace to fix the problem? Having a hard time parting with this Toshiba TV. As I mentioned before this TV is the best TV that we ever owned.

Yea, you get used to things

Yea, you get used to things but remember, things don't last forever. The problem with the white lines in this set is a common problem with these Toshiba TV sets. There are a couple of wave shape capacitors in the vertical circuit that go bad all the time. They are low value. I think 2.2 MFD or something like that. They are red and black in color. Most of the time they are located by the long black rectangle thing called the driver IC. Change those two capacitors and you should be OK. Good Luck

Larry I have no idea where the Driver IC is even located to be honest with you. I have no problem with changing some electrical parts if I know exactly where to look. Hey I had electric shop in High School over 40 years ago.  Do you think I could get someone in to do a repair or does this problem require me taking this heavy unit to a repair center? The latter I would rather not do.

Larry Dillon
I doubt very much if you will

I doubt very much if you will get a repair shop to repair or replace componets in an older set like this in the hoime as you cannot expect them to carry everything wih them
