Can a TiVo unit be used without subcribing to TiVo

I have a 40hr. TiVo. But,there was not enough

memory. So I got a DirecTV TiVo. With 80hr.

memory witch has been great. So I have this

40hr. TiVo unit, my question is, can I hook it

up to a TV and use it for a recorder.
