flashing and snapping Sony

First off, I'm new here and it appears there's some really sharp people here.  I'm very knowledgable of household electricity and automotive electrical systems, but my knowledge of electronics has been pretty much limited to replacing visibly damaged components and my father's vacuum tube teachings are just a bit outdated.

I have a Sharp 32SC26B.  When operating, the picture flashes accompanied by an audible shap through the speakers.  This commences and continues immediately after being turned on, occurs regularly approximately two times a second and does this whether the signal is TV or from a VCR.  With no attenna or VCR leads attached, the picture is snowy (as expected) but does not appear to flash noticably.  That could just be my bad eyesight.  However, the snapping sound can still be heard but not as loudly as with a signal input.

Anyone out there ever had this problem before?  As I've already said, I know next to nothing but could this be a high voltage related problem?  I haven't gotten the thing apart yet but would like to have some idea of where to start.  I know sometimes you can use a freon type refrigerant to cool individual components when troubleshooting, but since this problem occurs immediately upon starting, I have my doubts as to its effectiveness.  I hate to pay someone $60 to just set the thing on their bench.  I really need some help because the kids are hounding me to death and all this family togetherness is killing me!  Either tv advice or taking my kids will be greatly appreciated!

Studebaker hawk,  This TV set

Studebaker hawk,  This TV set maybe arcing in the picture tube or it could be a motorboating effect being caused by a bad capacitor or regulator in the main power supply.  With the back off, look around the picture tube socket while its on and see if you here a little snapping around the socket or see any spark gaps arching on the board.  Be very carefull here, as there is alot of high voltage on this board.  With the set off try pulling off the crt board off of the picture tube and make sure its not shorting against anything.  Turn on the set.  Is it still popping out of the speaker?  If it is, then There is another problem else where.  If it does not, it may be time to get a new Christmas present for everyone as the CRT is no good as its arching internally.  Now if it still motorboats or pops, put all the things back again, and with an antenna or cable wire attached,  Get a good Picture, turn up the volume as high as it will go.  You may get a little flack from this but its a good regulation test.  If the popping gets worse, and/ or the picture starts to flicker when the volume is on high, you have a power supply regulation problem and with out a schematic and some TV repair skills it would be a shot in the dark to tell you what is wrong, except for the main regulator IC does fail in this set alot.  Good Luck and please let us know how you made out.
