Yes you do, Just like a VCR was to a TV set . You put the DVD recorder on the channel you want to record, then switch off the Tv,DVD switch to TV on the DVD recorder and watch TV
I have a minor complication, I did as you suggested except I have a sattelite receiver. So I followed the instructions to hook it up to a satellite box, now I'm having trouble finding channels.
Look on page 8, It tells you how to hook up to a TV set. Or are yoiu trying to record something from the VCR DVD player to the DVD recorder?

okay,, I think I've got it. I have channel selection throught the satellite. Now i will try to record something to see if it works.
