Pioneer Big Screen TV-No Picture or Sound

I believe the manufactorer's date is 1995.  I was watching TV when I heard a some sort of an electrical (pop) for lack of a better word.  Anyway, the TV stayed on with no other abnormality present.  The next time I turned the Tv on, there was no picture or sound.  I went to the library and began reading some self help literature and relized the material was directed more towards a professional than a layman.  I do know how to use an ohm meter.  Is there a less suffisticated troubleshoot for a possible problem I may look for before hiring a proffessional?  i.e IF tuner?
