cannot access pvr playback

i bought a yamada 3000 hdd. i set it to record a program but when i try to access my recordings the machine just return to freeview channel in real time. should i have formatted the machine beforehand? i'm thinking of restoring the factory reset but that wipes out all recording and it's doesn't guarantee  that the machine will work the next time.
