REPAIR NEEDED FOR MITSUBISHI 35 INCH CONSOLE TV URGENTLY

Hello - this is my first time, so please bear with me..I am desperate for information - I own a Mitsubishi 35 inch tube console tv which is about 10 years old - model no. CK3526R. It has always been working perfectly up until last night at 2AM when I turned it off. This morning I went to turn it on and while I got perfect sound, I had no picture - just a thin line going thru the middle of the screen from left to right. I called up Time Warner Cable to sell if it was a cable or box problem - they sent me signals and we rebooted the digital cable box numerous times, but nothing happened - I still have no picture with only a thin line going across and perfect sound. What is wrong?? I really hope this is fixable because I love the tv and don't have very much money to throw around.  I have tried fiddling with the TV's manual controls instead of the cable remote and nothing changes. Please someone - help me!  Sincerely, Susan in Manhattan with no TV

Well Susan, Im sorry to tell

Well Susan, Im sorry to tell you, you have a vertical sweep falure.  It could be a capacitor or a vertical output ICV.  Im sensing that your not a technician that has test equipment??  There is No easy quick fix for this problem and it might not be worth repairing.  It all really depends on who you get to fix it, as the set has  lived its life expectancy.  Unless you know how to read a schematic, know how to solder and troubleshoot solid state electronics , with the proper tools, your going to need to seek out a pro to assist you in this repair.  Let us know how you made out.  Good Luck

Larry - You hit the nail

Larry - You hit the nail right on the head! Before I received your msg, I did some research yesterday afternoon and that's what I came up with - with the help of the Mitsubishi Corp. Indeed I am no technician; instead I am trying to possibly save this TV since it is a big console model, more like a piece of furniture, and if I can get a few years more out of it, this would be great. So I got the name of some authorized Mitsubishi TV repair people located in NYC and the one I chose is coming over to make a house call today at 3PM. They also informed me over the phone that I had this "vertical problem" which could possibly be fixed in my home or if not, they would have to remove the chassis and fix it in their shop. Maximum total cost of the latter, including removal and reinstallation and parts would be USD 330 - I think this is worth it since it is a beautiful TV with a great 35 inch tube picture when it works - I'd love to have your thoughts on this! Sincerely, Susan

Susan, If you like the set as

Susan, If you like the set as a piece of furniture, then of course its worth your time and money to invest into it, as you cannot buy another one for that price.. But of course Susan as you know , anything can go wrong as it is an older set. but if this is your first problem you should be ok as long as the tech does a good job checking out the rest of the set like for cold or bad solder connections, or capacitors that always goes bad in this TV set.  let us know how you made out.  Oh by the way i used to live in Queens and had a repair shop In New Hyde Park out on Long Island.  But Im many miles away now in northern Michigan

Larry - your help is

Larry - your help is invaluable and I have taken notes so I can "quiz" the repair man today.  I have also weighed the choices of fixing it versus a new TV, and indeed it's worth a try to repair it, as this is the very first problem it has given me in all these years. I will certainly keep you informed and if you decide to move back to Queens, please let me be the first to know! (By the way, my best friend lives in Michigan - near Benton Harbor?) - Susan

Hello to all - it is now

Hello to all - it is now Saturday afternoon and I have had my fixed and per-
fectly working Mitsubishi 35 inch TV back since 1:30 PM today!! I had a house
visit yesterday and the chassis of the TV was removed and brought to the shop
(of the Mitsubishi authorized service co. in NYK). The problems were multi-ple but all hit on the head here - vertical problem, loose connections, and
capacitors. The total cost including labor, parts etc - the whole shabang - was USD 290 (with a 3 month waranty on the work). I certainly could not have
replaced this console/TV for that amount and the fellow said I should get several more years of life out of it. Thank you Larry for your very accurate determinations - I didn't feel quite the idiot when the repair man came! Sincerely,
Susan
