I have a panasonic DVD Recorder DMR-e55 which seems to work ok for about 15mins.
It then just completely shuts down and will not allow me to turn it back on unless i completely unplug at the mains. Could there be something overheating somewhere?

Is this unit sitting on top of another componet? If not then theres a microprocessor problem it sounds like. Or a componet in the power supply could be glitching the processor, so it has to be reset. If it is sitting on another componet, move it or put a small fan in the back of the cabinet to help keep it cool.
