Magnavox TV broke- making strange noises!

Last week I purchased a 26 " Maganavox Tube TV from someone on Craigslist. (Dumb Idea!) She claimed the TV was in perfect working condition and was only 6 months old. It has worked fine up until last night. I was watching it and it just shut off. The strange part about it is that when it is plugged in it makes this strange high pitched noise. It was plugged into a surge protector at the time. I have not yet tried to plug it into a different power source, but everything else plugged into the surge protector is working.

I plugged in a different TV into the same power source and cable connection and it worked fine.

Any ideas of what happened to this TV? Is it possible I blew a fuse? How much would something like that cost to fix? B/c I bought it off someone else I have no warranty info...do I have any options regarding the warranty- or do I have to cover the repairs myself?

Needless to say this will be the first and last time I buy anything off craigslist.

Lindsay, Im so sorry to hear

Lindsay, Im so sorry to hear of your problem.  When a TV set makes a high pitch noise, and the sets not working, generally that is an indication that theres a short in the set's circuitry somewhere shorting out the main Swich Mode Power Supply.(SMPS)  This is not a blown fuse.  If you have no electronic repair experience, it would be best that you let a trained service person assist you with this repair.  And on new products, generally the warrantys are not transferable, unless you have the original bill of sale.  Sorry to have to be the deliverer of bad news.  Please let us know if you have the set repaired, and what was done to wake the set up and fix it.  Also Thanks for coming to http://www.techlore.com  Good Luck

Thank you for your response.

Thank you for your response. Is this an expensive thing to repair?

It will all depend on whats

It will all depend on whats shorted in the circuit. And how good and honest the repair person is.

Also, if it does get repaired

Also, if it does get repaired will I just run into the same probloem in the future? Did I just buy a lemon?

Larry Dillon
Well when you say lemon!? I

Well when you say lemon!? I do not think so, unless this could be why the other person sold the set tp you. You did buy it as is? Is there any statement that the set is in perfact condition? I mean a set should not blow out like this, if it is in fact a 6 month old set. On the back of most TV sets, there is a small paper tag with model number and some other info as well as the manufacturer date. You could look there and see if this set is in fact less then a year old. Im not sure what the rules are where you bought the set.

The girl I bought it from

The girl I bought it from said it was in perfect condition. She moved across country, thats why she said she couldn't take the TV with her (maybe she was fleeing from her broken TV!) The manufacturers date was in 2005- I'm not with the TV right now so I couldn't tell you the serial # off hand. It just is odd to me that it was working perfecly for almost two weeks then BAM- it breaks...maybe its my poor luck or a sign letting me know I shouldn't buy anything online! I will get a quote from a local TV repair shop and come back here to see if I'm getting ripped off or not. Does best buy have a tv repair section? Since that is where it was "supposedly" bought maybe I should try there...

Also I got nothing in writing from her, and no waranty or purchase info.

Last time I checked best buy

Last time I checked best buy had a local repair warehouse.   I was going to work for them and even went through all the interveiws and drug test,  but I moved, and this was in Miami Florida.  Check with your local Best Buy and see if they still do repairs and if they will pick it up or where can you take it to.
