I have a Magnavox model 51MP392H/17 crt rear projection TV. With an annoying problem.
1) sometimes the TV will not turn on.
2) when I am able to turn on the tv, there are times when it will not turn off.
3) When off the TV will turn itself on.
4) when on the TV will act normaly sometimes, however sometimes it will change AV inputs by its self. This problem is now lasting days. I must unplug the TV at night as it is in the bedroom and will turn itself on all night long.
5) When the TV is acting up any button on the remote will cause a AV shift.
6) The tv seems to prefer the AV channel that does not hve a picture IE AV3 which is the game input and has nothing plugged in. It also will stay longer on the CV input which is audio only, but will still shift by it's self.
7) I am not a TV tech, nor am I a electronics tech. I do know how to use a ditigtal VOM and I am aware of the High Voltage Cirtuits to the crts. On the magnavox the high voltage transformer seem to be near the back panel.
The TV repair guy was here today. He told me that the problem is the SSB circuit card. I have seen this card blamed before for almost anything that gose bad on thses TVs. The "good" news is the board will be here in 2 weeks. More "good" news I bought the $299.95 extended warrinity. The very bad news is the board with installation labor is $900.00. Now I paid $989.00 at Walmart for this TV. I must assume that this is a throw away TV, as I later saw the price had dropped below $800.00. This is the 2nd TV the first one I had to take back because the convergence really really sucked, and could not be ajusted enough to even get a picture. I cannot recomd this TV.
That board as I have stated before has the 100 pin microprocessor IC mounted to it but maggie or philips calls it a painter iC
Well the TV "tech" returned yesterday with a new SSB or painter IC board. It is a strange looking board as it is about 1 inch wide and is contained within a corragated or vented bright shiny metal box. At any rate the new board did not work at all. I now have to wait another week before another attempt is made. Last night the TV did behave normally although it did shift AV's once. Today I is not working as good. I do hope that a new, new SSb board will fix the TV permanitly, but do not hold out much hope.
The second brand new SSB or painter IC was installed last Friday. The TV worked perfectly for about 4 hours. It now is doing exactly as in the first beef above. One difference is when the TV notice blocks (like the volume line on screen, and other TV announcments AV1 ETC.) will start in their orginial locations then move to the very top of the screen and become smaller and distorted. the picture, however is not distorted.
This repeated falure of this module is most likly the power supply at fault causing the micro. to go bad.
The TV tech came last monday and for once accually lookrd at the TV doing what it is doing. He stated that something may be causeing the ssb board to act badly. (no kidding) He stated that it may be something call the small signel module. I think he said that the ssb board is plugged in to this. Now once again I am waiting 2 weeks for a new part.
OH and by the way while I am still waiting for the "tech" to return with more parts the TV is now working just fine. Go figure!
Bought the same tv at futureshop 07/03/2006. Never had a problem with it. Almost 3 years of flawless performance. Paid $1154 cash and $50 to a guy with a cube van to deliver it. DIDNT get the insurance plan...go figure. Your product usually always expires at the end of the warranty anyway...lol. Actually trying to sell mine...girlfriend thinks its too big for the bedroom but I love it.
