RCA 36" TV arcing

We bought this tv about 5 years ago.  We have really enjoyed it until a few months ago, it started to make a pop sound and the video would blink, sometimes turning white for a split second.  It was intermitent and sometimes we would go weeks without it doing that.

About a week or so ago, it started to arc with a loud pop.  Again, this was occassional until yesterday.  Now it does it every 5-10 minutes.  I am now quite concerned about it as we were watching a dark scene in a movie last night and when it would arc, sometimes I could see the arc inside the tube (or so it appeared).  The arc doesn't seem to be outside the tube because we have not noticed a white flash behind the tv or on the wall.  The arc I saw did in fact appear to be inside the tube and was about 6-8 inches in length extending from high and left of center towards the corner.  It appears to be in the back of the tube as opposed to being on the viewing surface.

When it arcs, picture goes dark, then a few seconds later the picture returns to normal viewing.

It doesn't make any difference whether we use the tuner or the aux/s-video input.  I appreciate any ideas you might have.  Saturday, I'm going to open 'er up.

You should have this

You should have this addressed right away, as if you dont it will get worse and blow out the horizontal sweep circuit. it could also be dangerous and maybe burn something inside the set. The arching I doubt would be a loud pop from within the tube. its most likly the HI Voltage lead wire or the HI voltage cup could be bad. It could also be the horizontal output transformer is arching, but when that happens it will usually smoke. In rare cases the Picture tubew socket will arc between the spark gaps built in to the socket. In any case I would advise to have this looked at asap as I said the longer you wait the more its going to cost in the long run.. Please let us know what you find out when you have it lookeed at. Good Luck

Thanks for the info, Larry.

Thanks for the info, Larry.  No smoke from the tv, so I don't expect the transformer.

I know about the high voltage.  That's why this electronics tech does not service TVs.   The first thing I thought of was that there might be a lot of dust and lint, and so I was going to blow the dust out of it with compressed air.  Is that a waste of time, or should I be looking for a bad HV lead or return wire?

It could be alot of dust but

It could be alot of dust but the amount you say its been arching ,its got to by now have a burn mark somewhere?? And by no means was I downing you or anything like that just my responsibility to warn peeps about the safety issues involving TV sets. Glad to assist if I can.

No Problemo.  Didn't think

No Problemo.  Didn't think you were downing me.  Appreciate your honest advice, really.  Best to be safe.  Took the set to the shop last night.  $175 to replace the flyback transformer.  Kinda surprised and kinda not.  Tech says it should take about 5 days to get the part here and the set back in my hands.  Let you know more when I get it home.  Miss it already!!!

The tech found a flyback

The tech found a flyback transformer in their store room.  Installed.  Set is home and working wonderfully.
