Hey guys and gals. I'm in desparate need of some assistance please. I have a Sony projection tv, model KP51HW40 that I bought in 03. I love it, unfortunately now when I turn it on, the screen turn's green with some sort of yellowish curvy design on it and then turns off after 5-10 second's. The standby light also blinks while it's doing this. Any suggestion's??? Could I possible repair it myself?? Thank you and God bless
Your problem could be a defective green tube, but most likly its in the green drive circuit, possibly the crt socket has a bad connection, the resistor on the crt board has gone bad or changed value, or the drive transistor is shorted. The TV's shutting down because of the excessive current draw on the power supply. This circuit, where this problem lies, is extremly dangerous, as theres the screen voltage, as well as the focus voltage, and both of these can bite you pretty hard. My advice to you, if you have no formal training servicing solid state electronics, please call a pro servicer to assist you with this repair. Good Luck and if you could please get back with us and let us know what you found, as possibly this could help someone else in the future.
Thanks Larry,, I was also going to ask what the 8 flashe's from the timer/standby light means. After I turn it on, the screen turn's green and the tv shuts off and the timer/standby start's flashing 8 times then quite's for a few second's then flashes 8 times again. Any thoughts?
Hi Larry,
I have a similar problem, only my set turns red and then shuts off. I looked into this a bit and Sony discusses a 'flickering issue' on there website. I called and they will fix the set, but will not pay for the service call. I took the front cover off the set and there is a panel of about 6 knobs that have white paint on them. I found the one that controls the red crt and adjusted it down so that the set would turn on and stay on. This messed up the colors, but I can watch the set. Now the colors seem to look pretty good over the course of a few months, but now the convergence is off. Are these related? Is the convergence board easy to replace/repair? I am not totally sure where the board is located, but if I knew I think I could replace the STK parts myself.
Tx,
Bill
Your problem is not the convergence. If you turned down the red a little to keep the set on, you only fixed it temporally. Your red picture tube is going bad I'm afraid. To get your set looking better try and turn down the other two colors till you get a good match and a good or decent picture. Good Luck
But in addition, I now have a convergence issue. I guess I have 2 problems to deal with. The convergence is off in the upper left and lower right of the TV.
So you will need to replace the convergence IC's as well as the red tube.
Hi Larry,
Just to double check since I don't have the schematics. The convergence IC's on the KP51HW40 set are STK392-560's right? Why just 2? I figured there would be one for each color. Just curious.
Also, is there a better replacement?
Thanks again,
Bill
I was jw if you ever looked into getting the set fixed and if so how much the service tech charged. my sony kp-57hw40 did the same thing with the green screen last night and I havent figured out what to do. thanks bryce
