motorola v3i headset help

due to the utterly useless booklet that motorola have provided me with,i dont know whether i have to activate the headphones when they are connected. At the moment when the headset is connected (usb adapter with stereo ear phones in) my phone still plays music through the loudspeaker.
Is there a setting which I can change or should the music automatically play through the ear phones when connected?
