LCD TV and DVD R recording problem

I have a philips LCD TV with a built in digital tuner. I have connected a DVD recorder to it. The problem is that everything works fine until it comes to recording. I cannot record digital TV channels. I have been told by the technidcal helpline for my product that I have connected everything up correctly and that I need to connect a freeview box to the tv/dvd to record digital tv as DVD R's do not record freeview programmes from tv's with it built in. The guy in the shop where I bought it thinks that it can. This seems to defeat the object of having a new tv with digital built in. Evreything else works fine I can record terrestrial tv, watch DVD's, watch digital and analogue TV. Upgrading to a DVD R seemed a good idea as I can get rid of my separate dvd player and vcr recorder and set top box.

I was told if you want to

I was told if you want to reocord digital off the tv the tv must remain on.

I have been told this by the Bush Helpline. I am using a VCR but the same problem happens.

This was my reason for contacting Techlore! I can't believe that having paid extra for for an IDTV I can only record Freeview programmes if the Tv is left on. It won't even work on standby.

Apparrently, if you connect a DVD recorder which also has built-in Freeview (i.e. more expensive) you can then record with the TV set turned off.

Please, someone tell me there is a way round this. My dog is having sleepless nights with the TV being left on!

Sorry  sam, the only other way Im told it will work without the TV set is with a separate reciver or freeview box to get the digital recorder to record a digital channel. Good Luck to you and i hope your poor pooch gets some sleep soon.

Larry, no, the Sony does not

Larry, no, the Sony does not have a built in digital tuner. The way it works is this. On the TV I select the digital channel I want to record. Press the red "record" button on the TV remote, and again to store it. Switch off the TV and leave in the standby mode. Before this make sure that the DVD R input is set at L3. Press record, and it will stop automatically when the disk is full. Alternatively program the DVD R to record using the timer. If you use this method, make sure the correct output is selected on the DVD R and that the TV is left on standby. Instead of selecting the terrestrial channel to record select "line 3" on the channel list. This is using my set up of a Philips lcd TV with a built in digital tuner, and a Sony DVD R. If you have a built in digital tuner in your DVD R it is much easier, and also much more expensive. Through my problems I have found out that some DVD R machines can do this, and some cannot. It depends on the make. Generally the cheaper ones cannot. Having said that I only paid £124.99 for mine in a sale at my local Dixons store. The original one was £79.99 if bought with the TV, which is why I bought it in the first place. I suppose the saying that "you get what you pay for" holds true here. Good luck.
