Problems connecting Thomson DTR6000AU to TV.

I have connected the Thomson DTR6000AU unit to my Philips TV but I cannot get the DTR to work.  I followed the instructions in the User Manual on Connecting Your DVR, but it still does not work.  Does it have to be connected with a VCR unit as well.
