tv clarity via direct cable vs. hook up through box

just got a sony wega sxrd 50....,

when i hook up the cable directly to the TV...i get very good picture quality except it don't get hdtv (supposedly) which i need either via a box (i have) or a cable card.

i hook up cable through the box to the tv..., and the hdtv stations are very crystal clear; UNFORTUNATELY, the remainder normal channels (including digital) are not as clear... (example: fox new channel...the filler screens at bottom are not as clear or one sees fuzziness at edges of bodies in contrast to backgrounds)..

So what are the recommendations? i thought i'd hook up a splitter and run one direct cable line to tv for normal everyday viewing and one cable line to box for use when i want the hdtv viewing....somewhat of a hassle to switch between the two....

Or, i was wondering if the cable card may eliminate the problem and provide the best of two worlds....

anyone else have this problem. Would love your opinions. thanks
