Can anyone help? Tried aerial cable direct from tv to socket and sound is distorted, that is very staticy. Some channels worse than others. Its a 69cm sony tv about 9 years old.
On a 9 year old TV, it's certainly possible that the speaker is bad. Try switching the TV to mono mode to see if it clears up some of the static. It won't sound as dynamic, but it may help until you get the TV fixed or replaced.
Dear Matt, thanks for advice.Unable to put sound on mono because there are no buttons that say stereo or mono on the remote or tv. Any other suggestions. I am not about to replace the set as it runs well apart from the sound problem.Only 3 of the channels aren't able to be listened to(we only have 6 free to air,and I don't have cable).Any other suggestions?

It's probably not an option on the remote. Check in the TV's on screen menu for sound options. There you may find the ability to put the TV in mono.
If it's a problem with the TVs tuner you could try using a VCR or other aerial tuner to clear up your sound woes.
