i have been into car audio for a few years and can never get enough bass. i currently have a Pioneer reciever (S-FCRW2500) with 5.1 pioneer surround and a Rockford 12" sub that was in my car hooked up to it. this sub is much better than the original that came with it but im moving out of the dorms and into a house for next school year and need much more bass for house parties and wat not. if i get a home audio amp, will it plug into the wall or is something else needed. i was looking at the Samson Servo 600 amp with the a Cerwin-Vega JE-36B Junior Earthquake 18" sub. i think it will thump and is in my price randge.....will everything work out?
I'm not entirely sold on 18" subs. For the most part, they hit low, but most of my listening to subs that size indicate that they're somewhat slow, and don't hold their own against multiple 12s or 15s for less money... at least indoors. Don't get me wrong, it'll hit hard, and should be more than enough bass for a house party, but the quality of bass will most likely suffer.
Unless you're going to be outdoors most of the time, and you have a wide area to fill, you may want to think about adding another 12. You already own a decent one, so I'd consider adding another one and powering it with a good 2 channel amp (You may even be able to get two better 12s for the price of the JE-36). The Samson Servo 600 should be fine, with 300 watts into to channels at 4 ohms. It'll run on AC power and work fine. I couldn't get a shot at the back of one, but I can't imagine anything else you might need.
If you decide to go for the 18", it'll output 600 watts at 8 ohms bridged into one channel. The JE-36B lists a peak power handling of 1000W, but only 500W program (meaning sustained power handling). There's a good possibility you could blow the sub if you run the Samson maxed, as the output wattage is higher than the sub spec, but be careful of distortion at even moderately high volumes.
Neither option is really better than the other. Each has their own ups and downs. I've never used a Samson amp, so I can't give too much insight on how they perform. It may be in your best interest to find a place that has them hooked up so you can see it in person and maybe take a listen.
Have you checked out Bag End subwoofers? They have been known to make things in a house rattle that weren't known to rattle (they respond to frequencies well below human hearing).
