Sony Hi8 Handycam not shooting....

My camera will turn on, acts normal, plays back footage in the eyepiece but in camera mode, it's all black. The lens cap is removed and there is power and the little icons for the battery and such show up, just no picture. Can anyone give me any thoughts on what it could be? Thanks!
