Sanyo - AVM-248 - won't turn on.

I have a five month old Sanyo and it will not turn on by remote or the power button on the set. The stand-by switch is lit, the batteries are fresh. Any ideas on what it is and how to fix it?

It seems to be a surprisingly common problem.
