I am a technological geek, and am just now getting into the MP3 world. A friend said there are MP3 players that do not require USB cables - does anyone know of brands and would they recommend them as opposed to units having the cables? Thanks

I don't know if I could tell you there are any advantages to not having a cable, since the cable is only present due to physical reasons. Smaller flash units like the iPod Shuffle and such have the USB port integrated into the player since they are very light. Larger units, like the iPod or Creative Zen, have a cable that connects the unit to the USB port, mostly because you'd snap an integrated connector from the weight of the player.
I'd recommend letting other features help you determine what to buy, and not worry about the cable.
