I just purchased a Denon AVR-1705 to replace a much older Sony system. I connected the unit to my existing Bose Acoustimass 4 speaker system. (4 speakers, left cube, right cube, center cube and Bose non-powered subwoofer.) I'm running the system with all the factory set defaults in my (small) living room and frankly it sounds terrible. I've tried tuning it to tell the system I have small left and right speakers and to set the distance from my speakers, but it still ends up sounding thin and cheap. There is no bass, and my boombox sounds better than this system right now. I know these speakers are capable of much more, my old Sony sounded great.
If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears! (Which is better than listening to what I have...)

Yes, you need to read these two articles:
The 'Bassics' of Bass Management & Configuring Your Receiver for a Passive Subwoofer (This one's very important for your setup)
It'll fix you right up.
