Zenith DVD recorder Model DVR413

My Zenith dvd recorder model DVR413 is about 1 year old. It has stopped recording properly. The picture breaks up, skips or freezes. I called Zenith numerous times but all they told me was that it was not under warranty anymore. ANY IDEAS ??? HELP !!!
