The picture on my Hitachi 31SX21B will sometimes shrink to a 2 inch horizontal line with a clear picture. So far it has always came back to normal.But ther is no pattern for its return. Is this something that I can fix myself?

Gotta get inside and know what your doing, so as not to hurt yourself or the TV further!!!

most likley it is your verticle ic or some thing feeding it. it dosent sound like a dead short so one of these two solutions should work
2) if the line comes and goes with vibration the thing to do would be to open it up then check the bottom of the board for sodder connections that look broken, burnt, or cracked especially in the verticle area. when you find them fix them and remove the old sodder first.
1)if it is not from vibration replace the electrolytic caps in the virticle circut
Sounds like it indeed could be a loose connection. Will try that as it gets worse. Thanks
