DIGITAL SET TOP BOX BY PHILIPS MODLE NO DTR 200/05

I would be most greatful to any one who could advise me on the following:
I have today purchased a Digital Set Top Box by Philips modle no: DTR 200/05.
My TV is very old and does not have a SCART socket. The DTR 200/05 comes without a RF Out lead. I was told by the Tesco staff when buying the DTR that i should by a RF Out lead and the system would work. However the system does not regonise the remote controll. I have used other batteries than the ones supplied but still no luck.
My feeling is that where a TV does not have a SCART socket this system will not work with a RF Out lead? I hope i am wrong but it any one can give advice I would be more than greatfull.
