no video

I just bought a Sony Viewcam model VL-E37, This is an older model camcorder. It plays my 8mm tapes just fine and LCD works but when i try to record it only records my voice, the LCD stays grey as if a lens cap is on. I tried the menu screen but cant find anything to explain the lack of a picture, there is no veiwfinder on this camera. Any ideas?
