Can anyone tell me why my television picture (Panasonic) is now only in the middle of the screen? Two wide black bands appear on either side of the picture. As far as I know, no settings were changed, however it the problem started when a DVD was played.

Problem
It sounds like you have a Widescreen TV. Widescreen TVs have several format modes to adjust the picture shape of square material to fit a widescreen TV. One of these modes puts blank space on the sides to display a square picture in its original ratio.
Look on your remote control for a button that says "format" or "aspect" to adjust the formatting to your liking.
