Running an older Phillips that initially plays DVD's and VCD's fine for about an hour then it will jump, freeze on a frame then lock up. Tried turning it off/on and it will give a reading disk message and then will display the open close message on the unit. Happened last weekend as well. Cleaned it, no change. Opened it up - disk was spinning and the laser light shows up but it won't recognize any discs. Left it overnight and put the cover back on and it worked fine - but didn't run it for an hour. Any ideas? Can jump to any chapter, start it, stop it, freeze it no problems.

Given your description, this behavior cannot be drilled down to a diagnosis remotely. You'll need to have a service center look at the unit in person for more information as to a possible cause.
