The battery was charged but my brain wasn't. I had forgotten that it's not the "Push" where I open it but the blue "Eject" button under the viewfinder which has to be raised in order to see it. (The "Push" is to close it and you have to be careful because there's a several second delay before it activates. You can't force it closed.) Problem solved.
May be a silly question, but is the battery charged, i.e. does it not work even if you plug it in?
