Does this occur on all

Does this occur on all sources, or only on one? Have you checked your cables for an intermittent connection. How old is the TV?

it occurs on all and if i tap

it occurs on all and if i tap or fiddle with the back it will come back on but its going off more often now. the tv was made in 98 i think and has had no problems before this. if its just a loose circuit board what am i looking at price wise i cant afford another. thankyou

Test number 2...

Have you tried replacing some of the cables, or only fiddling with the connections on the back?

i didnt replace any cables

i didnt replace any cables but when it goes off its on all sources(the menu also wont come up visually) and iuf ib tap the back it will either come right back on or after a few more taps it will come back on. when it is tapped a line if light will flicker each time till its back on and if you look in the tv itself you can see the colored tubes flick on and off. thankyou

There's a short, or defective

There's a short, or defective IC somewhere on the main board. It's not something I would recommend for you to try and fix yourself. You'll need to have a repair shop give you a quote. If it is just something that needs to be resoldered, the repair price should be reasonable. If replacing parts is involved, then it may be more expensive to fix than it's worth. Check back with us and let us know how much they say it will cost to fix.
