Regional codes are to protect

Regional codes are to protect software makers of DVDs and games from unauthorized distribution of games in foreign countreis. Hardware and software must be the same region code in order for it to work.

The only way you can get a console to play games from a different region is to use a "mod chip' to hack the system. Unfortunately, I'm unaware of any mods for the PS3 yet, so your best bet is to try and return your Japanese PS3 and purchase one from your area.

will i can not return is so i

will i can not return is so i dont no what to do now

Given the demand is still

Given the demand is still relatively high, you should be able to recoup a good portion of the retail price... though you'd fetch more if it were unopened.

I'd shoot for 350 or so (US) for the 20GB model, 450 or so (US) for the 60GB model. Again, those are just estimates; you'll have to figure out what you're comfortable with.

I feel your agony friend.

I feel your agony friend. Though it can still play PS3 games from anywhere. Only prob is that it won't play PS2 and PS1 games due to the region restrictions. Mine is from Japan too, no probs playing NTSC U/C PS3 games though. But my heart cracked in half when I found out that it won't play my American PS2 & PS1 game collection! SAD SAD SAD! I hope that they find out how to make mod chips soon!

lol i just found out that it

lol i just found out that it can play ps3 games so i took it out the box back going out to cee it i can get a game or 2

I don't like people who makes modification chips. It's illegal and mustn't be promoted. In cooperation lies our hope. Hackers have mistaken. They're wrong. We must find the strength to correct them. I don't promote piracy. I hope you'll understand my concern.

I certainly agree with you, and also do not promote software or game piracy through the use of mod chips (though defeating copy protection safeguards is often a side effect to chipping a system). In all fairness, however, chipping a system to bypass regional restrictions is not the same as playing pirated software. There are many titles exclusive to a particular region that people in other regions want to play (normally, a lot of the really cool Japanese games that never make it to the US). People often chip their systems to play these games, but they still buy the game from an importer.

It's not the technology that's outright bad, it's what people do with it that makes it so. If region restrictions were lifted, a lot less people would have interest in modding consoles.

Well, what you fail to understand is most of the time, mod chips and "hacks" usually used to unlock thoes silly region restrictions on games and DVDs, which isn't illegal if you bought them.

"Hacks" or custom firmware also open up the possibility for software developers who aren't big enough for Sony or Microsoft to recognize them, to showcase their abilities in new games (albiet simple ones) and software that no one has thought of yet. I have a "hacked" PSP that I run programs that let me connect to my IM servers and listen to music more efficently, not to play pirated games.

Hi guys , im in a bit of a

Hi guys , im in a bit of a hurry and need mayor help,my boyfriend's bday is comming soon and I want to get him a PS3 game that is not yet for sale in my country
I found online several versions of the game but I need to know which region should I get , looks like some games are region 3/1/2 and even found one that said region free, honestly I dont want to spend $75 on a product that will be send from Singapour to USA and then shipped to Costa Rica to finally found out I got him the wrong region and have to return it .
So how can I check to make sure which region is a PS3 just by looking at it ?? he does not have the original box as far as I am concern , is there any way inside dunno system menu / preferences/ tech specs or something as well inside the console ?

Thanks alooootttttttt

The answer is, unfortunately, not exactly clear cut and "may" vary by game. The short answer is that most PS3 games are not region coded and can be played on any PS3 console, although PSN features and DLC will not funtion in most cases because those will vary by region. Furthermore, you may run into PAL/NTSC issues depending on how the PS3 is connected to the display.

See this thread for more.

My advice to you is that if they are planning to release this game in his country down the road, I'd hold off until then; particularly if there's an online component.

Won't get into the wither-tos and why-fors as no-one running into this problem really cares about the reasons for the restrictions. Suffice it to say you can mod your PS3, and run the risk of losing PSN access if their system detects the mod, or you can limit yourself to only games distributed for the same region as your PS3 came from.

There is always a chance that, in the process of modding the PS3, something gets broken or the chip is defective and the PS3 gets damaged, but the practice seems wide spread so the risk would appear minimal. Just something to be aware of if you go this route. Your PS3 will no longer be covered by warranty if you mod it so any such work is going to mean you can no longer get Sony to fix or replace it if something goes wrong. Depending on your location and relative confidence/knowledge that may not be relevant to you either though.
