Ok so earlier tonight I tripped over a pile of books I left on the ground (I just moved into an apartment and was assembling a bookcase) when I bumped my TV and knocked the cable cord off it. Unfortunately, it took part of the 'receiver' (no idea what it's called), the metal part the cable connects to, off the TV, breaking the connection between it and the TV itself. Of course I had to do this the night before the Super Bowl. Anyways, how much do you think it would cost to get it repaired? I'm not tools-savvy at all so fixing it myself is pretty much out of the question. So what do you guys/girls think?
It sounds like you knocked off the RF fitting that hooks up to the tuner and brings in the signal. If you have a VCR, hook up the video outputs from the VCR to the Video inputs on the TV set if the set has them. Hook up the antenna or cable line to the antenna input on the VCR and change the TV to video input and change the channels VIA the VCR for now. The RF fitting should not cost more then 35 to 60 bucks to get repaired unless you damaged the tuner when the fitting pulled out. If this set does not have a video input, I guess your dead in the water my friend. Even if the VCR does not Play a tape, you can still use the VCR as your tuner if the VCR stays on. Good Luck, and let us know how you made out with this set.
Little update. So I was playing around with the RF fitting a minute ago, and I managed to place it I guess in the right way so now the TV is working fine. My new question is this: In the RF fitting, where that metal rod/wire sticks out, does that actually have to connect to anything inside the TV, or just touch something? Because right now it's obviously connected firmly to anything inside. I mean, if this is how the TV is normally set up (which I doubt) I could just find a way to re-adhere the RF fitting.
Correction:
"Because right now it's obviously connected firmly to anything inside."
It's NOT connected firmly to anything inside. Sometimes I drop off words when I type.
Yeah, if you have any ideas let me know. I'd like to move the TV off the floor and back onto the ent. center, but I don't screw up the situation right now since the Super Bowl is gonna be on in a couple of hours.
The connections on the inside fitting has to be soldered into place, as it will soon start to be intermittant. Also the connection on the outside of the f- fitting has to be soldered to the shield where it was connected before you snaged it.
Thanks for your help. As for the soldering, how much of the TV would I have to take apart? Is it a simple process? I'm debating whether to ask a handyman friend of mine for help and just re-use the same RF fitting, although I don't know if he even has the tools to do it.
I also was able to get a hold of a TV repair place earlier today and I was told that it could cost around $85, although he wasn't sure. I think I could get it for less somewhere else though. This just eats me because I literally bought the TV 2 days ago off craigslist for $60, and although the repair may cost more than that $125-$150 is still a good deal for this TV.
You wouldn't by any chance happen to live in San Diego would you? Heh.
No, I live in northern michigan where it was -6 degrees last night with -34 windchill. I have seen someone hook up a brand new 3000 projection TV set and trip over wires that they did not hide yet as they were to excited about their new TV set, and rip out the rF fitting. Good Luck to you and let us know how you make out with this repair.
