Does anyone have a solution to the so-say universal remote that doesn't want to work?
I have an old Emerson VCR 875 that I use for a back up system. The remote control is almost shot so I bought a Sony Universal remote RM-V202 to see if it would work for the VCR. I have followed all the operating instructions in the manual, but to no avail.
-The TV works with the remote so it is functioning.
-The VCR works.
-The old remote still works with the VCR.
-I have tried entering all the supplied code numbers following the instructions.
-I have tried "searching for the Correct Code".
Is there something that I am missing?

If you did the auto search mode in the remote, it went through all the codes that are programmed into a remote. You can go to http://www.remotes.com and enter a model number of the unit you are trying to control to see if its available there. They even show you a picture of it. Let us know how you made out. Thanks Larry for your reply. Good site to go to. I could not get the Sony remote to work at all but tried a Phillips and got it to work really easily. It does all the things it is suppose to, so I think I'll stick with it.

The remote just seemed to quit working so I got a replacement. That worked for a short period so and then it too quit. We now have Directv and the remote they supplied worked for a time and now it also quit. What happens is that all remotes seem to comtrol the tv once it is on but NONE of them will either turn the tv on or off.
Is there an eye that needs to be cleaned ???

This is a weird problem. Are these remotes that you are trying universal types of remotes? I know for the RCA there are some codes that will work most sets with the functions but not the power. I had this problem with my RCA 36" set with my dishnetwork remote. I would do a manual search, then the set would shut off, and I would secure that code, but when I went to turn on the TV it did not work. But when I manually turned on the TV set, the remote worked all of the functions. So what i did was to redo the manual search with the remote, when the set turned off I turned the set back on by the front panel power button ans proceeded on and the very next code turned off the RCA set again. I then enterd the code and tryed the set and it worked! It turns out that there are several RCA remote codes that may work for some functions but not all. I was informed by an RCA tech that RCA universal remote codes are almost all the same but there are about four differant codes that will work one function but not others. Also for some reason, or at least no one is admitting this fact, universal remotes lose the codes for some of the RCA functions out of the blue, especially if they are the RCA type of universal remotes. I had one of these remotes once that I had to reset every two weeks or so, untill i bought a better universal type remote. Now there is a possibility that you could have a problem with the remote sensor or the associated circuitry, but if you try a differant remote after the others fail and it works, HMMM Im wondering if you tryed to reprogram those past remotes? I just bought an older phillips tv from a hotel sale (model pc5220). It's connected to cable that uses a remote. I couldn't adjust the volume with the cable remote so I bought a universal remote from radio shack. Now when I attempt to turn the tv on with the universal remote the screen flickers then goes black then I hear a click inside the set & it's off. Any idea what's going on?
