Hi, my 10-year old Sony 46" projection TV has developed 2 problems in the last few days:
1. It take it about 1 minute to power up - used to take about 20 seconds
2. Picture is not nearly as bright as before. Colors are toned down. Tried adjusting brightness, color, contrast, etc. to no avail.
What could be the cause and what would avarage repair bill be?
Thanks.
Being 10 years old I would quess that the picture tubes are comming to thier life ending time. This is how tubes that do not fail all at once. they slowly will lose thier emission and get dull and darker over a period of time. Not alot you can do. Sometimes a picture tube rejuvinator can bring back a weak tube up to par, but there is a chance that the rejuvination will distroy the tube, and also you never know how long the rejuvination will last. I have seen pitcure tubes last one hour for as long as 5 years after a rejuvination. It also probly needs cleaning inside the set also, so try the cleaning first. In the reflectiom area where the three picture tube lens are and the mirrors. Good Luck, and let us know how you made out.
Hello Larry,
Thanks for the reply. As I mentioned, this problem came about over the last 2 or 3 days. Could aging show up all of a sudden? And why does it take the set so long to show a picture? Could it be a low voltage problem?
Thanks.
I should also add that the set developed a red picture problem about 6 months ago, which was repaired. I assume the technician cleaned the inside at that time because the picture was back to normal after the repair.
It certainly could be a low voltage problem. I looked up some notes and found that there have been capacitors cause a slow warm up problem in the past. They are in the sweep power supply circuit.
