I have a Sony KP-57WS500 bought in 2002. Three weeks ago, the set would come on - the green image would get brighter and brighter - then the set would turn off. Had a TV tech come out - he said something in the green gun circuit was drawing too much current and causing the control circuit to turn off. He got into the service menu, turned the green gain way down, and the set seemed ok. Last week after I turned the set on, the red gun image was offset 1-2” to the right and on the left side of the screen there was a curved set of lines and a red edge, as though the entire red picture was completely offset. I tried the Auto Convergence - the green and blue images are in perfect alignments - but the red is offset 1-2” to the right (only left-right, top-bottom marks are right-on). I’ve gotten into the Service Mode - but I am unable to move the red image (I have been able to move the blue image). Although everyone seems to have convergence problems, this seems to be only the red image - red gun circuit. Are the green and red problems related? Has there been a failure somewhere in the red gun circuit? I would prefer to find the cause of the problem - to fix it myself or at least before I call the tech out again.
Thanks to reading several of your excellent responses to similar problems, I went online and I got the sony service manual. I have experience with troubleshooting and technical information. Your suggestions will be appreciated.
Your red convergence IC is defective my friend. You should replace the other one also, as it will go bad latter down the road. The IC's should be replaced ONLY with what Sony recommends the replacement device should be in the parts list of the manual. There are alot of after market or what's known as cheap counterfit semicondutors that peeps will buy for 5 to 10 bucks. Although most of these do work, they simply do not have the correct specs. on the parts and will fail sooner then they should. This is not really a hard job for most seasoned tech's, as there are some dangers involved with High Voltage issues. Also sometimes other smaller componets like return resistors will burn up or a fault will happen in the power supply feeds to the Convergence IC's. If you have had any solid state repair experience, I wish you luck. Just remember, if you do replace the parts, make sure, on the new IC's, you use new heat sink compound on the mounting plate before you reinstall them. If you don't feel comfortable unsoldering and soldering printed circuit boards, seek out a pro to assist you in this repair. let us know how myou made out with this repair.
Larry,
Larry,
I buy a lot from HERE. Good Luck!
