Plasma Screen humming constantly , getting louder

Hello,

I have a Panasonic PT-42P1 Computer monitor. Its a 42 inch plasma screen and its about 8 or 9 years old. It probably has about 10,000 hours on it. However the picture on it is as crisp as my new Sony XPR2 40 inch.

anyway when i turn it on as soon as a picture starts a humming sound comes out of the unit. It always did it, but now recently its been getting louder and louder.  I read on another thread that it could be a electrical problem inside the tv. If i take it to a repair tech will it cost alot of money to fix? Also what could the problem be so i can save him the trouble of investigating it for himself.

Thanks alot in advance

Uhm, im pretty sure its built in. The power cable goes from the wall directly into the Tv. So i guess you would say its built in.

Heres the owners manual to the unit,

Thank you SO much for all your help thus far and for the help you will provide looking into this problem.

Ok I think now I have all the

Ok I think now I have all the answers to make an educated guess on the problem at hand, you have a "singing" coil or transformer. The only thing I can recommend is if you know your way around a TV circuit, and know the safety rules for serviceing TV sets and or monitors, open the back, turn on the set, and see if you can localize where the humming is comming from. Could be a coil or transformer somewhere on the board. These can be dificult to locate. If you can hear where its comming from, lite pressure with a wooden dowl or wooden spoon may changre the tone so you can be sure what to replace. Now sometimes, there is a noise comming from the main power supply because of a capacitor going bad. A test of the power supply waveforms on an ocilliscope will verify that. Like I said, if you have no TV serviceing experience, please play it safe and call in a pro to assist you with this repair. Good Luck and keep us posted on the repair progress.
