Hello, I hope someone can help. I have a widescreen Philips TV set that has developed a problem where it switches itself to standby then will not turn back on until a while later, then eventually it does it again.
I have had it in a repair shop who have had it on 9 til 5 for the last four days with no problems. They think it therefore may be the tube but say it could be be days/weeks/months before it "goes".
We have only lived in this house for a year and this is the second tv to have had these symptoms. The old TV was an Amstrad which we had been using for 7-8 years so just thought it had seen better days and replaced it. The repair guy says the signal from the aerial should have no effect on the set and the signal is fine/clear anyway. The power in our house should be fine as we had a new fuse box fitted 5 months ago.
Is it possible some other sort of signal in the area would effect the TV set ie keep switching it to standby?? Are philips tvs notorious for such problems?
Is there anything else plugged in to the wall where the TV is?. Have you tryed to take out the remote batteries when this problem occours to see if the remote is telling the TV to turn off, as if it was, and you would not be able to turn back on the set till the remote stopped sending that signal. Yes these sets are famous for bad solder connections in the power supply, as well as the microprocessor IC circuit to have a fault with it. This is a hard call, and the repair shop should know to goinside the set and probe around here and there to see if they can duplicate the problem. Well Good Luck and hope you get your set fixed. if you do eather way, please report back and let us know what you found.
Thanks for replying LD , I did switch the TV to its own socket from a gang adapter when the problems first started but they still persisted and then I had the aerial checked out which was fine and the aerial guy said that should not cause the tv to switch off anyway. I remember doing the remote battery thing with my old TV (which didnt work) but have not tried it with the Philips one so maybe I can try that when the set is returned to me tomorrow. I do have two scart leads going into the TV for digi box and dvd/video could they be the cause of the problem? Also have wireless internet could that effect the tv? Drowning man clutching at straws here me thinks.
The Scart could be but unlikly. let me check on something, I will get back with you tommorrow night late.
Hi Larry
Got the TV back they said it never went off for them over the days that they had it. Went off after an hour or so as soon as we started to use it again. When it goes off the stanby light flashes twice then pauses then does a double flash again and carries on until you switch it off is this some sort of signal to a trained engineer?? Tried removing batteries from the remote an TV still switched itself off, any ideas. also removed all scart and problem still continued
Ok let me ask you to try something. Once the sets is working fine and dandy, turn up the volume on the set to full volume. This will indicate if you have an intermittant problem with the power supply regulation circuit. If it does not change or the TV set does not turn off? This is going to be a tough one to trouble shoot. GOOD LUCK. And please let us know if you do have it fixed and what was done to get the set repaired.
Larry, finally found out what the problem was. Went to new tv repair shop who said it was more than likely the "painter chip" a common fault on Philips widescreen models, it can throw up many problems with your tv, apparently they dont use this anymore. It was not cheap to repair as the chip had to be sent away to be re-programmed. The shop say they have done 100's of these repairs in the last couple of years and none returned so far. The baby and the neighbours were not happy with your full volume advice by the way but every avenue had to be explored to find the problem. Anyway hopefully I'll have few years of trouble free tv now and thanks for your help Larry.
Thank you for getting back with us and lettinf the folks here what you had to do to resolve your problems. Good luck and have a geat holiday.
