Philips Magnavox TS2744 C106 CRT

My wife was watching TV and she said she heard a loud crack and then the tv went blank. There was a strong electrical smoke smell in the air. I assume its the high voltage transformer. I let it sit for 24hrs before I plugged it in again. When I plug it in now I can hear a ticking sound like a clock or a cartoon time bomb. Also there is a low repeating, "womp, womp" sound. Sorry to use such technical terms. Laughing I am wondering if it is the high voltage transformer and if this model is worth repairing. I believe we bought it in 1999, it's worked fine until now, and it had a great picture. Any suggestions?

Sorry my freind but I think

Sorry my freind but I think your diagnosise is about right. This model and the age does have a history of having bad High voltage transformers. Now the thing is, is it still available? If you search around maybe you will find one. The cost? Since it is not a user replaceable part unless the user has extensive solderinfg skills as well as solid state repair experience, probably not. Now we will talk about the labor and parts. Some older bills I saw recently on a set similar to this one was around 195.00 to 260.00 Now you know you can get another set for alot less then that. Good Luck and please let us know what you decided.

Thank you for your reply

Thank you for your reply Larry! Although I am disapointed, I was quite sure that is the response I would get. Well, now I know what goes at the top of my Christmas list! I am probably fortunate I got as many years out it as I did. I wanted my next TV to be a flat screen, HDTV (like everyone else), but I wanted to wait a few years until technologies and HD channels were further along, now I have a dilemma. I might try to find a cheap replacement for this one and still hold off on the flat screen. Thanks again!

I also have a Phillips

I also have a Phillips-Magnavox TV, model TS2744 c106. I just recently signed up for ATT's U-Verse which has the fiber optic signal coming thru the coax cable, into the DVR recorder, which feeds into the DVR player and then into the VCR and then into the TV.

I also have available to connect to this TV, a DVD player,(not currently hooked up but was in the past when we had ATT Cable). There is only one coax cable input jack on the back of this TV and NO 3 prong, 3 color, cable hook up capability.

How can i hook up the DVD and the VCR to the TV at the same time? Do I need a 2 way input coax cable switch of some kind so I can switch back and forth between the VCR and DVD being input to the TV ??

The TV still works great and i can not justify getting a new one until this one craps out.

Thanks for your help.
