Phillips TV motherboard problems

We have a 32' Phillips tv that is just over a year old--2 months out of warranty. One day the screen just went blank and the sound quit. There was still power but all we could hear was a clicking sound. The repairman said the motherboard was burned out and it was going to cost $500 to repair it. We opted not to fix it and contacted Phillips. I was told "Sorry, ma'am but sometimes a bad one just comes off the line. Your warranty expired 2 months ago." I was furious so I was transferred to consumer relations and told they would review the problem and get back to me within 3 days. It's been a week now and no word from Phillips. I do plan on calling them back but does this seem right? Shouldn't a motherboard last longer? Shouldn't they replace it since it's only 14 months since we purchased it? Should we pursue it further with letter/phone calls, etc. to Phillips, Consumer Reports, and whoever else will listen?

My experience is that usually

My experience is that usually if it is only a couple of months out of warranty and the device died through no fault of my own, the manufacturer will still fix it if not for free than at a steep discount off of what they would normally charge.

I have not had any experience with Philips specifically or with a motherboard dying on me, but if it were me, I would keep trying and work my way up the management chain until I got a better answer.

It's probably not something

It's probably not something you can fix. The nearest authorized service center is Norman Electronics, Inc. in Atlanta. Ph (770) 451-5057

Give them a call and see if they offer in home service. If not, use Pioneer's Authorized Service Center Finder to find another service center.

I had exactly the same

I had exactly the same problem with my 32" Philips Plasma. The power protection circuit won't allow set to turn back on. Got an estimate to fix for $2,000.00 in NYC. LOL. Sent a letter of complaint to the CEO of Philips Electronics North America. Their Presidential liasion Dominick Maggio told me tough luck. The set is out of warranty. They refused to help me. There is an inherent problem with these sets and Philips refuses to acknowledge it or recall their models. My job now is stop anyone and everyone I know from ever buying a Philips product again.

ROC, if you want to share

ROC, if you want to share your opinion with others, write an article for TechLore. If you want to do one on Philips, and the things they have done to ignore their customers, I say go for it. If you write it well, I'm sure you can influence a lot of people here at TechLore.

Well from what I've read here

Well from what I've read here about Philips/Magnavox TVs, I'm not surprised about my own experience. I have a friend who buys auction items and trade ins. He asked me to take a look at a 32in. tube TV. It wouldn't stay on they said.
So I "shotgunned" it (that is a quick try fix with a hot soldering iron). I went over the High Voltage transformer pins from the bottom of the Printed Circuit Board. ( This can get hot and acts like a ultra sonic vibrator.) It worked long
enough for me to watch a 90 minute video so I though that it was working ok. The customer got it back and it didn't work for them. ???
What now? I'll bet even the trained techs are pulling their hair out on these things. They can thank someone for expired warranties. They probably wouldn't fix it anyway, just send out a new one and maybe report the bad one if it is still in production but that is not likely. Oh well. Buy one from those that will service what they sell. Thanks WalMart, KMart, Best Buy, Target, Big Lots, Kohls, and all that I have forgotten. When are you going to start selling automobiles? Oh yah. Unions cost to0 much. Thanks Jimmie Hoffa.
