Zenith TV problems

I have a 27" Zenith portable TV. Several months ago it started to go from a full screen to a thin  white line in  the middle of the screen. It steadily got worse but always went back to a full screen.  Then after it was on a while it started to go from full screen to thin line and turn off. If I unplugged it and waited a while , plugged it back in it would turn on and after some tapping on the top of the TV   it would work.  Now it doesnt turn on at all I can hear it click on but there in a black screen.

Any ideas?

First off, by not addressing

First off, by not addressing the problem in the beginning, most likly, you caused a more severe problem.. My freind Im not trying to know you or insult you in any way.  When a solid state peice of electronic equipment has an intermittant problem, I know the first thing to try is hitting it to see if it makes it work.  Its not the best thing to do.  Try in the future to address the problem right away as then it most likly will not cost you as much to replace or repair your set.  If you have to hit a cabinet to get a set to work, Its an indication of a poor or bad solder connection, a bad plug or connector connection.  Everytime you hit the set to make it work, your stressing the curcuit from not working to working.  What it does is cause heat, and heat with electronics is a killer.  I said my piece now so lets address your problem.  A zenith TV set is made so one can replace the entire printed circuit board at a time, so authorized Zenith dealers can repair them in the house.  it doesnt always work like that anymore.  A repairman will try and repair the set at a cost well above the cost to replace the entire board, if they are not authorized.  So My advice to you is see what an authorized zenith repair want to replace a main module in your set, then you can determine if its worth it to you.  let us know please how you made out.  Good Luck

Thank you for your comment

Thank you for your comment and advice. I dont take it as an insult at all   I have to agree with you on hitting the set,  not a bright idea... but.  I did take the back off and your right the only things in there are the picture tube and a main circuit board. The board looks pretty straight forward to replace. Dont think it's the Tube?   Can I buy the parts myself?

It all depends on how old the

It all depends on how old the set is and how much your willing to spend.  Most modules for Zenith are an exchange and cost over a hundred bucks or so.  If you post the model number I can look it up and tell you exactly.

The Zenith Model # is Z25A11S

The Zenith Model # is Z25A11S Serial # 722-13271212
Main board # 204-03233-04

I was just working on it and

I was just working on it and I got it to turn on again. If i lifted the corner of the main baord slightly where the cable input is it stablized. Or if I slightly tilted the TV forward is would stablize. Let it back down and it turned off

Sounds like a cold solder

Sounds like a cold solder connection on the board..  Do you know how to solder and do you have a pencil soldering iron?  If you do, maybe you can resolder the bad connections.. What you need to doi is take out the board and look at all the solder connections and see if they have small ring type cracks around them.  Just got an e-mail from a bud telling me the main module for the set you have is NO Longer Available..  Its number is a 9-1790.. Please keep us posted.

Yes I do know how to solder

Yes I do know how to solder and I have a pencil soldering iron. I agree with you I think there is a bad connection somewhere. I had it on for a while and the picture is very good. If you lift the board just so slightly it stays fine, let it down and tv goes off, odd thing too is if you lift the tv itself a bit forward it stabilizes. I may have to look with a magnifying glass to find the fault. Keep you posted. By the way The set was made in 1997. It wasnt used all that much, just me watching it in the evenings.

I have a Zenith 36 inch tv

I have a Zenith 36 inch tv approx 8 years old.  No problems until yesterday when my wife heard a snapping noise and now the screen has a greenish bright shade to it. The picture is clearly visible with the exception of this color change. What could this be, and is would it be worth repair.

Thank You

You have a bad picture tube

You have a bad picture tube or the CRT driver board had a blowout. I myself would not even invest in an estimate for this TV set, but thats really your call. At this point, at eight years old, you will start nickle and diming the set till you spent enough over the next couple of years to buy a new set. Good Luck and let us know if you have it fixed.
